Northwood's local history
As the name suggests Northwood was originally part of the Manor of Ruislip which is situated north of Ruislip Woods. During Medieval times the Manor was owned by the Norman Abbey of Bec and two monks who lived in the priory (where Manor Farm in Ruislip now stands) also owned a property in Northwood near the present site of The Grange (Hotel & Restaurant) which was occupied by servants and ploughmen. Northwood existed of little more than farmland for hundreds of years but its development into a residential suburban town was rapidly accelerated by the arrival of the Metropolitan Line in the late 19th century.
